Our Favorite Healthy Summer Foods!
It’s July, which means summer is officially upon us! Fresh produce is a healthy and delicious way to stay cool this summer and the warmer months mean it’s even more abundant! No matter what time of year it is, we know that all of our friends in the dental industry are aware that our oral health relies upon a mix of vitamins and minerals.
Below are a few of our favorite healthy summertime snacks that have been linked with a lower risk of heart disease and cancers:
- Tomatoes – Tomatoes are cancer-fighting heroes! Tomatoes have a very high lycopene content, which will help protect your skin in the hot summer sun. Tomatoes are also high in vitamins C and A, both of which are crucial antioxidants.
- Watermelons – Watermelons are a staple of every summer BBQ! True to their name, watermelons have plenty of water (92%, actually), which will keep you hydrated and make you feel fuller on less calories. Like tomatoes, watermelon also contains lycopene!
- Apples – Apples are natural teeth whiteners and have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and cardiovascular disease! In addition, biting and chewing apples will stimulate saliva production in your mouth that, as you know, will wash away the acid and bacteria that causes plaque. Perhaps an apple a day will keep the dentist away!
- Strawberries – Strawberries are considered one of the superfoods! This fruit is packed with antioxidants and nutrients and can aid in cancer prevention. Strawberries are also good for eye health and can help you regulate your blood pressure! They’re also an important and delicious part of any summer party’s fruit salad!
